Who we are
River of Life is a Bible-based church in the heart of Bakersfield, California — a community of believers passionate about worship, the Word, and reaching people for God. Whether you're searching for a church home or simply curious, our doors are wide open and our hearts even wider. We believe God has called us to this city for such a time as this, and we would love for you to be a part of what He is building here.
We are led by a pastor and his wife who have devoted over 20 years to ministry — from Sunday school and youth work to now shepherding this growing congregation. Together with their two sons, they have given themselves fully to this calling. Their heart is simple: to love Bakersfield, serve its people, and see lives transformed by the power of God.
What we believe
At River of Life, we are a Bible-based church — meaning everything we teach, preach, and practice is rooted in the Word of God. We don't follow trends or traditions for tradition's sake. We simply open the Bible, take it at its word, and do our best to live it out every single day. If you're new to church or have never explored faith before, we want you to know: you are welcome here, and we will always point you straight to Scripture.
THE BIBLE
We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God — not just an ancient book, but a living document that speaks to real life, real struggles, and real hope. It is the foundation everything at River of Life is built upon. When we make decisions as a church, when we teach, when we counsel, when we worship — the Bible is always our starting point and our final authority. You will hear it preached clearly and honestly every time you walk through our doors.
GOD
We believe in one God — the Creator of heaven, earth, and every living being. He is not a distant, unknowable force. He is a personal God who loves you and desires a relationship with you. Throughout history, He has revealed Himself to humanity in three distinct ways: as the Father who created us, as the Son — Jesus Christ — who came to earth to save us, and as the Holy Spirit who lives within and guides those who follow Him. One God, fully known, fully present, fully loving.

BAPTISM
When someone gives their life to Jesus at River of Life, one of the first steps in their new journey is water baptism. We baptize by full immersion — completely under the water — in the name of Jesus Christ. This is not simply a symbolic ceremony. Baptism is a deeply meaningful, scriptural act of faith. Going under the water represents dying to your old life and the weight of your past. Coming up out of the water represents rising into a new life — forgiven, renewed, and free. It is one of the most powerful moments a person can experience, and we have the privilege of witnessing it regularly at River of Life.

THE HOLY SPIRIT
One of the things that makes River of Life unique is our belief in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You may not have heard much about this before, and that's okay. Here's the simple version: we believe that God doesn't just save us and leave us on our own. He fills us with His Spirit — His very presence living on the inside — to give us strength, guidance, and power to live the life He has called us to. In the Bible, when the Holy Spirit filled believers for the first time, they began speaking in tongues — a language given by God as evidence of His Spirit at work. This is still happening today, and it is one of the most extraordinary gifts God offers His people. If you have questions about this, we would love to talk with you about it in person.
